Given the number of car accidents every year, it’s a safe bet that the more you drive, the higher your chances of getting into an accident. While there are plenty of ways to improve your safety on the road, it’s best to be prepared for anything, including filing for a car insurance claim.

When to File

If you sustain injuries from the crash and require medical treatment, you should file a claim to cover your expenses, along with the damage to your property. This is also true if your car is vandalized, stolen or incur damages from a fire, flood or any other type of severe weather conditions and natural disasters, says the DMV.org.

What You Need

Keep the contact numbers of your auto insurance agent or insurance company in your car or phone for easy access. That way, if you ever get into an accident, you have the records you need to start the legal wheels in motion.

Also, when you file a claim, you’ll need to provide details that include:

  • Your full name and policy number so make sure you’ve got your insurance policy in the car as well
  • Your policy’s start and end date
  • Your name, address and contact numbers. If you’ve got passengers or witnesses or if someone else is driving the car under your permission, they need to provide those details too
  • Your driver’s license and license plate numbers. Get the other driver’s details, too.

It would also be extremely helpful if you can take pictures or a video of the crash site, your car and the surrounding area. Record your injuries as well.

Hiring Help

Don’t forget to engage the services of an excellent car accident lawyer in NJ. You need legal representation to make it easier to navigate through the case. With the assistance and support of your lawyer, you won’t have to jump through those legal hoops on your own.
